2013 ExxonMobil Math & Science Scholarships

The 2013 ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors in urban districts represented by the Council of the Great City Schools. Four $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students on behalf of the former NASA astronaut, physician and businessman, Dr. Bernard Harris.

In this activity, student teams learn about construction and engineering design by building a domed structure with an internal frame that is strong enough to support 120 grams of coins or candy on top. They present their domes to the class and complete reflections on the lessons learned.
The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC), one of the country’s premier science education programs, offers graduating high school seniors a month of outdoor adventure and hands-on projects in the beautiful woods near Bartow, W.V., all travel costs and camp fees paid. A typical day might include a lecture on origami math and making duct-tape wallets.
The second – and final – draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) was released for public comment on January 8 for a three-week review period. Developed from the National Research Council’s Framework for K–12 Science Education, these cross-disciplinary new standards set “performance expectations” for students, and integrate engineering and design into the traditional core science subjects. The goal: Have students learn by doing science, not just observing or reading about it.
