60 freshman at Maryland’s North Harford High School will be the first to join a new Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences program, spending time outside the classroom in barns, pastures, and fields to learn about farming and the environment.

The Nifty Fifty are a group of engineering and science professionals chosen to fan out across the Washington, DC area October 12 -20 to speak about their work and careers at various middle and high schools. Part of the 2010 USA Science and Engineering Festival, each speaker will make at least one, three-hour commitment, where they provide their own visuals and have lunch with a subset of interested students.
States across the country have long supported cutting classroom size to enhance learning. But given the tough economic climate and continuing state budget cuts, that trend is likely to be reversed, with class sizes expected to inch back up. A bad thing? Maybe not.
The Dept. of Education Math and Science Partnerships (MSP) program gives out grants that support partnerships between the mathematics, science, and/or engineering faculty of institutions of higher education and high-need K-12 school districts. The program’s goal is to increase student achievement through increasing teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical skills. As a resource, the MSP program maintains a comprehensive archive of websites and programs created around the grants, search-able by location.
The National Lab Day (NLD) website not only represents a nationwide initiative to foster ongoing collaborations among volunteers, students, and educators, but also provides an extensive, search-able list of educational resources, an archive of community and academic projects, and a directory of events.
The RealWorld-InWorld NASA Engineering Design Challenge encourages students in grades 9-12 to explore and build skills essential for successful careers in STEM subjects through two phases of project-based learning and team competition, working with the Webb telescope.
Principal Penelope Eucker worries that America no longer produces enough scientists and innovators. She hopes to counteract this trend at her magnet STEM school through a hands-on, science-based curricula designed with help from local business and technology experts.
The College of Southern Maryland’s 3rd Annual Youth in Technology Summit, a day complete with technology demonstrations, STEM workshops, building trades, college and technical school planning, career development, networking, and more, will be held on November 13, 2010.
