The National Academy of Engineering’s EngineerGirl! website announced on May 28 the winners of the 2010 EngineerGirl! – Survival Design Challenge Essay Contest. This year’s national contest asked students (grades 3-12) to describe how they would use the clothing or accessories they are wearing and items in the environment to survive or get the attention of a rescue party if they were lost during a field trip to a national forest. More than 800 students submitted essays. Prizes ranged from $500 for first place to certificates for honorable mentions.

IT giant Hewlett-Packard is spending $1 million to support STEM learning through an international, interdisciplinary effort to join together schools, colleges and universities and nonprofit educational groups to work on specific issues. Five of these consortiums, or “sandboxes of innovation,” will tackle STEM-related challenges, from teacher training to online and collaborative learning.

A survey conducted by Public Agenda and funded by the GE Foundation has found that Americans are conflicted when it comes to mathematics and science instruction. While a big majority say that strong math and science education is key to the country’s future, most parents think that the science and math classes that their kids take are “just fine.”

Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry is one of the largest science museums in the world, housing more than 35,000 artifacts and nearly 14 acres of hands-on exhibits. the Museum’s Center for the Advancement of Science Education offers student learning labs, after-school science clubs, teen volunteer programs, teacher development classes, and community outreach. Teachers may be particularly interested in the museum’s online activities.

The Mütter Museum, maintained by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, was founded to educate future doctors about anatomy and human medical anomalies. The museum is devoted to improving the health of the public through its education programs, services, and resources. Mütter provides in-house lessons, download-able workbooks, tours with special group rates, fun videos for students, a junior fellowship program, and a virtual tour.

This simple lesson from The Works Museum in Minnesota consists of two activities that introduce elementary school students to the engineering design process. Students first work through a chart detailing the steps of the design process and then use the steps to consider ways to solve one of three problems: rescuing a trapped kitten, devising a way to water plants while on vacation, and rigging up a remote light switch.

At the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond, visitors will find interactive learning and activities at the exhibits: Science Unplugged, Bioscape, Electriworks, Newton in SpacE: bodies in motion, Space Gallery, Virginia Tech Solar House, and the Virginia Tech Solar House. Visitors also will soon be able to visit the green roof project atop the IMAX theater. Museum programs include visiting exhibitions, educational programming, overnight adventures, lectures, demonstrations, live theater and summer camps.
