The National Academy of Engineering is soliciting nominations of students who have made a contribution to one of the 14 NAE Grand Challenge problem areas: Sustainability, Health, Vulnerability, Joy of Living. The winning stories will be featured at a summit on April 21, 2010 at Wellesley College, bringing together educators, students and leaders from business and government to explore new ways to educate the next generation of Grand Challenge leaders and to celebrate the efforts of young people working to solve grand challenge problems. Deadline for nomination: March 1, 2010. For students age 13 and up.

The 2010 Intel Schools of Distinction Awards program is open for applications. The National Center for Technological Literacy at the Museum of Science, Boston is a sponsor of this program, which recognizes K-12 U.S. schools demonstrating 21st century teaching and learning environments and implementing innovative programs that inspire their students to excel in the areas of math and science.

The Science of Speed program, produced for the National Science Foundation (NSF), explains the scientific principles so essential to the NASCAR experience. Through 12 videos ranging in topic from “firesuits” to “friction and heat” and “load transfer,” viewers learn how science and engineering makes sports cars powerful, agile, fast and safe — and how these same principles affect cars on the street.

The exhibit hall of Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta, GA, spans some 9000 square feet, circling a planetarium theater, and split over two levels. Within these areas are numerous displays which deal with a whole array of scientific concepts. The theme for the entire exhibit area reflects the slogan of the Science Center: “Where Science Becomes an Adventure.”
