National Geographic airs a Sept. 16, 2010 TV special on competitors who undertook the
Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE challenge to create the world’s most fuel efficient car. The pool of contenders profiled in the episode range from inner city kids and small town families to corporate teams.
Teams sought to produce a vehicle that by could meet the competition’s strict requirements, including the ability to achieve 100 miles per gallon or the energy equivalent and to survive grueling real-world safety, efficiency, emissions, durability and range tests. The prize of $10 million will be shared by three winning teams.
Award Ceremony: The Geographic episode coincides with award presentation in Washington, DC, for the winners of challenge. Open to the public, the ceremony will be hosted by Arianna Huffington, of The Huffington Post, Jim Gianopulos, of Fox Filmed Entertainment, and Progressive Insurance and the X PRIZE Foundation.
