Website: Smithsonian’s Ocean Portal
The Smithsonian Institution’s handsome new Ocean Portal is described as a “unique, interactive online experience that inspires awareness, understanding, and stewardship of the world’s Ocean.”
The site includes information on ocean life and ecosystems, an ocean time line that dates back 3.5 billion years, photo essays, a section on ocean science, news about latest ocean developments, a blog, and videos. The educators’ corner offers free lesson plans and resources.
As the third pillar of the Smithsonian Institution’s Ocean Initiative, the Ocean Portal builds upon the momentum of the National Museum of Natural History’s Sant Ocean Hall and appointment of the Sant Marine Science Chair to increase the public’s Ocean understanding and stewardship.
