Teachers’ Summer: LEGO Institute. Tufts U., August

Tufts University Summer LEGO Engineering Institute

August 2-6, 2010: NXT-G August 9-13, 2010: LabVIEW Education Edition

The week-long Summer LEGO Engineering Institute is a way for educators to gain knowledge of engineering concepts, LEGO hardware & software, and associated pedagogy/educational theory. Exploration of the LEGO bricks and related theory will primarily be done through participation in hands-on, open-ended design projects. The institute is open to any K-12 teacher, informal education provider, volunteer, or member of industry interested in learning about LEGO Engineering. We offer two sessions of the Summer LEGO Engineering Institute. The first week will use the NXT and LEGO Mindstorms NXT software (NXT-G). The second week will use the NXT and LabVIEW Education Edition.

The Institute is open to any K-12 teacher, informal education provider, volunteer, or member of industry interested in learning about LEGO Engineering. 30 PDPs will be awarded for this workshop.

Participants will:

• Learn about the Engineering Design Process
• Learn LEGO building techniques
• Explore Gearing and Gear Ratios
• Learn to use and program the LEGO NXT
• Understand NXT-G or LVEE programming logic, control, and sensor input (ROBOLAB will also be available to participants)
• Explore the educational pedagogy and theory of using hands-on engineering projects
• Investigate how to teach other content (math, science, reading) through engineering based projects
• Discuss and develop classroom management strategies

Participants will leave with:

• A collection of classroom tested LEGO activities
• An introduction to LEGO related resources
• An introduction to LEGO related resources
• A written plan for implementation in your educational setting
• A workbook of building & programming resources

Cost: $600. Location: Tufts University Center for Engineering Education and Outreach, Tufts Medford Campus. Hours: Monday-Thursday 9am-4pm, Friday 9am-3pm
