Outreach: NASA’s Summer of Innovation

NASA’s new Summer of Innovation initiative, kicked off on June 10, will engage thousands of middle school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics during the summer months when many students experience what’s known as the “summer slide,” a loss of skills acquired during the school year. Summer of Innovation 2011 has been proposed and is slated to go on, but no date has been selected yet.

The one-week ASM Materials camp at Missouri University of Science and Technology, July 25-30, 2010, offers rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to explore materials science and engineering principles through a combination of mini-demonstrations, field trips, and group projects. Past projects have included microelectronic circuitry, friction-stir welding, ceramic magnets, metal casting, glass processing, and heat treatment and mechanical property evaluation. Cost: Free. Application Deadline: May 31, 2010. 2011 dates to be announced.
Penn State Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp, June 27-July 2, 2010, for grades 11. In this program, students spend time in state-of-the-art laboratories guided by veterinary and biomedical sciences faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. They interact with veterinarians, immunologists, and toxicologists, and learn veterinary and biomedical professions through laboratory exercises, lectures, and a tour of a local veterinary practice. Level: 11th grade students. Cost: Program cost: Day-Camp Option price: $405; Residential Option price: $550. Application deadline: June 11, 2010. No new information posted for 2011.
Drexel University’s Summer Music Technology (SMT) program August 2-6, 2010, introduces high school students (esp. grades 10 and 11) to the technology of digital music to reveal the influence and importance of engineering, science, and mathematics in music performance, recording, and listening. Cost: Free. Application Deadline: April 12, 2010. No new information for 2011.
The Lyles College of Engineering at California State University, Fresno, invites central San Joaquin Valley high school girls, grades 10-12, to attend the 2010 Girls Summer Engineering Experience (SEE), 12-16 July, 2010. This week-long day camp is for girls interested in engineering or construction management. Structured hands-on activities, speakers, technical workshops and field trips will make it a fun filled educational experience for all participants. Cost : $250, ($200 for Girls SEE Alumni). Application deadline: May 28, 2010. No new information for 2011.
Boise State University is hosting two summer engineering camps, for students grades 8 and 9, June 6-8, and for girls grades 9 – 10, June 11-12. Students who will use hands-on activities and projects involving self discovery, cooperative learning, critical thinking, and problem solving. Application deadline: May 1.
STEPS is a one-week introduction to the world of technology and engineering. Campers participate in hands-on activities that give them an understanding of what engineers do. Students will also explore science and engineering topics such as materials, clean manufacturing, CAD and team building.
Attend a free hands-on workshop that explores man -made materials. Have lots of fun and learn about the science of materials, (AKA: “stuff’ ) from experts. High school teachers: its free, 5 days 40+ hours, full standards based physical science curriculum, free instructional content, free CEU’s. Join thousands of inspired physical science teachers who have attended. Students: spend a week in a real science lab, apply the scientific method and in a small team of peers solve a materials science mystery. Tons of fun. Free.
