NASA’s new Summer of Innovation initiative, kicked off on June 10, will engage thousands of middle school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics during the summer months when many students experience what’s known as the “summer slide,” a loss of skills acquired during the school year. Summer of Innovation 2011 has been proposed and is slated to go on, but no date has been selected yet.

The one-week ASM Materials camp at Missouri University of Science and Technology, July 25-30, 2010, offers rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to explore materials science and engineering principles through a combination of mini-demonstrations, field trips, and group projects. Past projects have included microelectronic circuitry, friction-stir welding, ceramic magnets, metal casting, glass processing, and heat treatment and mechanical property evaluation. Cost: Free. Penn State Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp, June 27-July 2, 2010, for grades 11. In this program, students spend time in state-of-the-art laboratories guided by veterinary and biomedical sciences faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. They interact with veterinarians, immunologists, and toxicologists, and learn veterinary and biomedical professions through laboratory exercises, lectures, and a tour of a local veterinary practice. The Lyles College of Engineering at California State University, Fresno, invites central San Joaquin Valley high school girls, grades 10-12, to attend the 2010 Girls Summer Engineering Experience (SEE), 12-16 July, 2010. This week-long day camp is for girls interested in engineering or construction management. Structured hands-on activities, speakers, technical workshops and field trips will make it a fun filled educational experience for all participants. Cost : $250, ($200 for Girls SEE Alumni). STEPS is a one-week introduction to the world of technology and engineering. Campers participate in hands-on activities that give them an understanding of what engineers do. Students will also explore science and engineering topics such as materials, clean manufacturing, CAD and team building.
