Experience hands-on science activities at the National Academies of Sciences’ Koshland Science Museum in Washington, DC, this June and July 2010, on Saturdays. Learn why some light bulbs are more efficient than others; investigate how hydrogen can be used as an every day fuel; and explore how immunization, antibiotics, and public health measures help prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Micron Foundation’s Chip Camp for Boise, Idaho area seventh and eighth graders offers students an opportunity to learn more about the intricate business of designing and manufacturing semiconductors and integrated circuits. This year’s three-day Chip Camp sessions will run June 15-17 and June 22-24 at the Dehryl A. Dennis Professional Technology Center in Boise and will serve 120 students from 40 different schools. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is looking for successful summer and other out-of-school programs that can be show to provide improved academic achievement of participants and a focus on STEM careers and career pathways. Proposals will be accepted until July 16 from non-profit organizations, state-based educational leadership organizations, and U.S. school districts.

The Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics Global Teachers’ Academy is seeking student applicants for its fourth annual two week summer workshop for high school students and teachers. The “Physics in and Through Cosmology” workshop will be held at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory adjacent to the University of California, Berkeley Campus beginning Monday, July 19 and ending Friday, July 30. The deadline for applications is June 30.

NASA’s new Summer of Innovation initiative, kicked off on June 10, will engage thousands of middle school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics during the summer months when many students experience what’s known as the “summer slide,” a loss of skills acquired during the school year. Summer of Innovation 2011 has been proposed and is slated to go on, but no date has been selected yet.

The one-week ASM Materials camp at Missouri University of Science and Technology, July 25-30, 2010, offers rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to explore materials science and engineering principles through a combination of mini-demonstrations, field trips, and group projects. Past projects have included microelectronic circuitry, friction-stir welding, ceramic magnets, metal casting, glass processing, and heat treatment and mechanical property evaluation. Cost: Free. Penn State Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp, June 27-July 2, 2010, for grades 11. In this program, students spend time in state-of-the-art laboratories guided by veterinary and biomedical sciences faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. They interact with veterinarians, immunologists, and toxicologists, and learn veterinary and biomedical professions through laboratory exercises, lectures, and a tour of a local veterinary practice. Engineering the Future® Three-Day Institutes is a concentrated, hands-on workshop offered by the Museum of Science, Boston, open to all teachers interested in expanding their knowledge of standards-based engineering design.Participants work through key activities in each of the course’s four projects, and have the opportunity to ask questions, practice what they’ve learned, and discuss concerns with course developers and experienced teachers.
