The Maryland Business Roundtable plans to start an online networking site where STEM teachers can share lesson plans and connect with university, government, and corporate experts. The STEMnet site will debut in one large district this spring then expand to other districts next fall.

Purdue’s College of Science K-12 Outreach program provides professional development programs for teachers, forms long term partnerships with school districts, and presents activities for students. It also offers class visits, curricular programs, laboratory equipment, and other activities aimed at the improvement of science and math education.

The Nifty Fifty are a group of engineering and science professionals chosen to fan out across the Washington, DC area October 12 -20 to speak about their work and careers at various middle and high schools. Part of the 2010 USA Science and Engineering Festival, each speaker will make at least one, three-hour commitment, where they provide their own visuals and have lunch with a subset of interested students.

Highlights for High School is an MIT initiative providing free, open source teaching and learning materials to high school teachers and students. These materials include video lecture clips, lecture notes, practice problems, exams, and other resources from MIT’s introductory physics, biology, and calculus courses; mini-courses for high school students developed by MIT students; and an introduction for students to the college-level MIT curriculum and course materials on OpenCourseWare.

The New York Institute of Technology, in conjunction with Intel, is offering free training and certification in teaching 21st Century Skills during the week of July 12. This course is designed to create a foundation of skills for teachers to fully integrate technology into existing classroom curricula and has the potential to close the achievement gap for students in science, math and technology. Participants will explore learning experiences in the STEM content areas and will include instruction in rich internet resources and cutting edge technology. No new information for 2011.
