Science Center: Fernbank. Atlanta, GA
The exhibit hall of the Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta, GA, spans some 9000 square feet, circling a planetarium theater, and split over two levels. Within these areas are numerous displays which deal with a whole array of scientific concepts. The theme for the entire exhibit area reflects the slogan of the Science Center: “Where Science Becomes an Adventure.”
Teachers and students in the Atlanta, Ga. region, should check out Ferbank’s 2010 teacher summer program on garderning, the 2010 Lockheed Martin Aviation Camp for 4th – 6th graders, and the 2010-2011 advanced studies programs for high school students, including a semester program on forensic science and year-long program on robotics and engineering.
On Saturday, Feburary 20, 2010, 1:00 – 3:00 PM, Fernbank hosts a bridge building competition, in celebration of National Engineers Week. The goal is to design and build a bridge-type structure in one of two categories: Toothpick Category and Open-Materials Category. Once entrants have designed and built their bridges, the event provides a convenient, fun-filled place to test how well they work.
The competition is free and open to all. Students, parents, sponsoring engineers, and teachers are welcome to submit bridges! Each entrant will receive a certificate with the results of the bridge test, an event T-shirt, and other interesting stuff. The event will help introduce students to careers in engineering.
