Resource: Los Alamos National Lab Educational Programs
Multi-program Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico provides a number of different programs and materials for learners and educators at all levels. Last year, more than 1,200 students took advantage of educational opportunities at LANL. The lab offers high school work experience options, online resources for both teachers and students, student profiles, internships, teacher professional development, conferences, educational tours, mentoring opportunities, undergraduate programs, graduate programs, and a mobile science museum.
LANL’s High School Co-op Program is designed for high school students looking to get a head start on their career and earn money in the process. The program combines academic studies with on-the-job training in a variety of technical and administrative career fields. Students can work full-time during the summer and continue part-time during the academic year. Students are selected based on aptitudes and interests, grade point average, and number of credits toward graduation.
The Los Alamos Energy and Environmental Science Academy program is a professional development experience designed for teachers working at the high school and middle school levels. Selected participants come LANL for three 8-week summer sessions involving laboratory and field-based research activities. The first session is scheduled for June 14 – August 6, 2010. The program is delivered as one site for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science’s Academies Creating Teacher Scientists (ACTS) program.
