UPDATE 2/2/2015: A western Pennsylvania high school team is among eight teams to win the 2014/15 Verizon Innovative App challenge.
One high school team created an app that helps conserve energy by displaying information about energy usage. Another team devised an app to help a blind classmate navigate their middle school.
These were just some of the 2013/14 national winners 0f the Verizon Innovative App Challenge, a collaborative and creative competition designed to excite students in middle and high school about STEM careers. The contest awards $20,000 grants to the winning middle schools and high schools and Samsung Galaxy Tabs for students on the winning teams.
Participants need not have advanced technical skills or knowledge to dream up a way to address a real-world problem using mobile app technology. (MIT’s app inventor software lets anyone build an app in an hour.)
Do your students have app-titude? Registration for the 2014/15 challenge opens August 4, 2014. The deadline for submission is November 24, 2014.
