Experts: Overhaul Teacher Prep
An expert panel is calling for an overhaul of teacher preparation in the United States, with training programs operating more like medical schools and setting tougher admission and graduation standards, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Teacher candidates for grades K-12 need to spend more time in the classroom, learning to teach and demonstrating that they know how to improve student achievement, stated the panel convened by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. It also recommended that teacher training and assessment result from close collaboration between local school districts and higher-education officials.
“As a nation, we are expecting all of our students to perform at high levels, so it follows that we need to expect more of our teachers as they enter the classroom,” council president James Cibulka said.
