Hurricane season is here, reminding us that accurate weather forecasts can be a matter of life and death in vulnerable coastal areas of the country. Even inland, severe thunderstorms play havoc with late-summer travel, and tornadoes threaten lives and property. In this lesson for grades 6 to 8, students begin by considering how weather forecasting plays an important part in their daily lives. They learn about the history of weather forecasting — from old weather proverbs to modern forecasting equipment — and how improvements in weather technology have saved lives by providing advance warning of natural disasters.

SCCMS, South Carolina’s Coalition for Mathematics and Science brings together advocates from business/industry, education, government and community organizations who seek constancy and quality in the state’s approach to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Though our name is new, our history and our impact on instructional improvement date back to the South Carolina Statewide Systemic Initiative (SSI) and Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform (LASER) partnership forged in 1998. SCCMS is a member of the National Alliance of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions (NASSMC).

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (Girl Day) is celebrated internationally during Engineers Week each year. Families and educators are encouraged to join their students at UT for an afternoon of engineering fun. Girl Day gives 1st through 8th grade students a chance to:

We believe students get excited about careers in through interaction and hands-on demonstrations. With that in mind, The School of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (SEMS) at RMU continues to host Saturday workshops on an on-going basis during the fall and spring for middle and high school students. The workshops involve all three disciplines and some of the topics include Robotics with Lego Mindstorms, Modern Lab Instrumentation, Perfume Science, and ZOOB Mania.

The USC Viterbi School’s Engineering Writing Program publishes the online magazine Illumin (http://illumin.usc.edu) as an educational resource. Illumin’s mission is to be a “review of engineering in everyday life,” explaining the relevance of engineering practice to common, non-engineering activities. Students and teachers world-wide have used Illumin’s article’s for reports and projects.

The Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE) Center coordinates an international student ROV competition and a network of regional ROV contests that take place across the world. Student teams from middle schools, high schools, home schools, community colleges, and universities participate in the events, which consist of different “classes” that vary depending on the sophistication of the ROVs and the mission requirements.
