The Northwest Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in Fort Worth wanted its students to address issues like urban sprawl and nonrenewable energy. Its solution was an eight-week-long School of the Future design contest that required 17 teams of students to do “intense research” in the new-urbanism movement and in green technologies.

But students at the John Mall High School in Walsenburg, Colo., are — with the blessing of the local school district — being encouraged to use theirs. Necessity is the mother of invention, and the experiment is an attempt to get around a shortage of working classroom computers.

St. Cloud State University has developed a lab on wheels, better known as the Science Express, that visits K-12 schools in central Minnesota. The 53-foot-long semi-trailer contains a highly sophisticated science lab with equipment that no K-12 school could afford to have.
