National LGBT History Month

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans have made notable contributions to engineering, science, education, and innovation. In honor of National LGBT History Month, the American Society for Engineering Education presents a diverse group of outstanding achievers.

Students in grades 1 to 6 follow the engineering design process to build and test a catapult that launches projectiles, such as marshmallow “pumpkins.” They then make changes to improve their launcher’s aim and distance it can hurl the projectile.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science. High school and middle school students are quizzed in a fast paced question-and-answer format similar to Jeopardy. Competing teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach.
ASEE has put together a public/private partnership to develop ways of engaging students and teachers in engineering. Participants will learn about innovative, hands-on, project-based engineering activities, courses, curriculum options, events, outreach programs, professional development, and competitions.
Ainissa Ramirez, associate professor of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science at Yale, explains the wonders of her ever-expanding field in a series of YouTube videos. In the latest, she describes how a layer of carbon that is one atom thick, called graphene, will revolutionize our lives.
The Extreme Redesign 3D Printing Challenge invites middle school, high school, and college-level students worldwide to send the Stratasys 3D printing company their best redesigns. Along with cash prizes, the top 10 entries for each category will be printed on a Stratasys 3D Printer. Deadline: Feb. 6, 2013.
The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) is an eight-week summer research opportunity at participating Office of Naval Research laboratories for high school students who have completed at least grade 9. Applicants must be 16 years of age for most laboratories, and U.S. citizens or permanent residents. A graduating senior is also eligible to apply. The stipends for the summer program are $3,150 for new students and $3,680 for returning students. The application must be completed by January 6, 2012.
