With School Money Tight, Teachers Seek Grants
In Florida’s Manatee and Sarasota counties, more teachers are seeking grants from education foundations to pay for books, microscopes, education software, iPods and other classroom teaching aids that just can not be covered in the regular budget, the Sarasota Herald Tribune reports.
The amount of grant money coming into Sarasota County increased about 10 percent this year — from $20 million to $23 million.
Manatee’s grant money is expected to match last year’s total of $13 million.
Declining revenues have forced school districts all over Florida to slash millions of dollars from their budgets, cutting everything from teacher training to support positions and money for field trips. Dollars that used to be available for special projects or classroom extras must now be used to cover the basics.
