Launched in 2014, the Trustey Family STEM Teaching Fellows program at the University of Notre Dame’s Center for STEM Education offers teachers in grades 5 to 8 a high-quality, immersive professional learning experience – travel, lodging, and meals covered.
The goal: foster interest and engagement in STEM, particularly among underrepresented populations.
Working in school-based teams of three or four, teachers attend two-week summer institutes on campus over the course of three years to develop their STEM integration and core instructional practices along with a STEM Impact Plan. During the school year, they continue working on their impact plan, collect video of their teaching performance, and receive feedback from their content coach. The fellows then gather in Palo Alto, Calif., for the two-day RISE Summit in January. A capstone project completes the program in the third summer.
Themes of equity, access, and leadership are woven throughout the summer institutes.
Fellows can come from traditional or charter public schools or from Catholic schools. They must remain on the Notre Dame campus and attend the full summer institute, which runs this year from July 13 to 25, 20202. This only cost to the school is hiring a substitute teacher for two days in January.
Criteria: Applicants must apply as a school team – at least one member of whom must be an early-career teachers (3 to 10 years of experience), have their principal’s full support, and remain at their existing school for the duration of the two-year fellowship. Teachers of record for at least math or science class are strongly preferred, though other STEM-related teachers may be eligible. Engineering, including Project Lead the Way, technology, and computer science falls under the STEM category.
