The Maryland Business Roundtable plans to start an online networking site where STEM teachers can share lesson plans and connect with university, government, and corporate experts. The STEMnet site will debut in one large district this spring then expand to other districts next fall.

The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) wants to tap into the collective brain power of super-smart high school geeks. The Pentagon agency is spending $10 million on a project that would have teen braniacs using Web 2.0 social-networking skills to speed up and improve defense manufacturing technologies.

Game over! After 8 hours 56 minutes, an MIT team solved the contest, entered by more than 4,000 teams.
The DARPA competition, starting Dec. 5, challenges teams to compete for a $40,000 prize, to be the first to submit the locations of 10 moored, 8-foot, red, weather balloons at 10 fixed locations in the continental United States. Participants must register on the competition website and should check there for full details and rules.
