Students Get Practice in Architecture
An advanced drafting class at Chico High School in California has been turned into something resembling an architectural office, the Chico Enterprise Record reports.
Seated behind computers equipped with the latest architectural software, the teens set to work designing homes, out-buildings and even a police training center — all projects that will soon be constructed based on their own plans and designs.
They have a strong command of the latest technology in the architecture industry, can hold fluid conversations about trusses and load-bearing walls, and routinely schedule meetings with their clients — who include local businessmen, property managers and even the city of Chico.
“This is really college-level stuff,” teacher Mike Bruggeman said, as his students pored over drawings and calculations near him. “We’re operating on a very sophisticated level. It’s very rare for a high school to offer a program on this level.”
