President Unveils STEM Initiative
President Obama has announced a campaign to enlist companies and nonprofits to provide money, time, and volunteer work to encourage students–especially in middle and high school–to become involved in science, technology, engineering and math.
The campaign, called “Educate to Innovate,” includes a number of different facets. One company, Discovery Communications, has promised to use two hours of the afternoon schedule on its Science Channel cable network for commercial-free programming geared toward middle school students, the New York Times reported.
President Obama, in his remarks, held parents and students responsible for student success, and said, “America’s youth will rise to the challenge if given the opportunity…” After the speech, two Oakton, Va., high school students staged a short robotics demonstration.
More information on “Educate to Innovate” is available online, as is a video of the President’s speech.
