Website: Ocean Education Teacher Center
The Bridge Ocean Education Teacher Resource Center from the National Marine Educators Association offers a host of different resources approved by teachers, for teachers. The website features news, lesson plans, activities, data, publications, virtual expeditions, information on science topics, featured websites, teacher-chosen web resources, help in guiding students, student programs, and professional development like workshops, grants, awards, courses, distance learning, and summer programs.
Bridge’s featured virtual expeditions allow K-12 teachers and their students to experience realistic scenarios undertaken by scientists and other professionals. In the Students Experiment At Sea (SEAS) program for middle schoolers and older, students are introduced to the scientific process, experimental design, and data analysis. SEAS contains units on plate tectonics, hydrothermal vents, ridge visualization, and surveying deep sea organisms. Students become the scientists, developing proposals for at-sea investigations, while the teacher coordinates submission to researchers studying the East Pacific Rise. Students retrieve, organize, analyze and report data from their experiment. Past experimental journals are posted. Free registration is required to access the curriculum and submit a proposal.
The Bridge also maintains an in-depth list of science fairs for students to attend.
