More Teachers Using Digital Media

Computer room

The classroom: It’s no longer just about book-learning. More teachers than ever are making use of digital media and the Internet, according to a new survey by education research group Grunwald Associates and commissioned by PBS, reports eSchoolNews. Last year, 76 percent of K-12 teachers reported using digital media in their lessons, up from 69 percent the year before, and 80 percent of those who did called themselves frequent or regular users. At the pre-K level, however, only 33 percent say they regularly use digital media.

In what was good news for the public broadcaster, however, the pre-K teachers said PBS was their first source for educational TV and online content. PBS is looking to bolster its position as a provider of digital educational content by starting a Digital Learning Library; it’s set to become available later this year via PBS member stations. The survey also found that while K-12 teachers marginally prefer using recorded DVDs, a growing number — 72 percent — are now also downloading or streaming classroom content from the Internet. Another trend, the poll found, is teachers making increasing use of student-created media, including websites, blogs and social networks.
