Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (Girl Day)
is an international event celebrated during Engineers Week each year for 1st through 8th grade students.
Families and educators are encouraged to join their students at The University of Texas at Austin for an afternoon of engineering fun. Girl Day gives first through eighth grade students a chance to:
- have fun doing grade-specific, hands-on engineering activities,
- meet students, professors and engineers from industry, and
- see what it’s like to be an engineer.
The next Girl Day takes place Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 2 to 5 p.m.
The Girl Scouts of Central Texas will have Girl Day patches for sale at the event. Patches cost $3 each and will be available at the Girl Scout booth. All Girl Day participants will receive a Girl Day giveaway as well as an activity passport to record the day’s events.
How it Works
Activities for first-third graders, fourth and fifth graders and sixth-eighth graders are housed in UT’s engineering complex. Students are encouraged to build and experiment at their own pace with all of the age-appropriate activities in their specific building. There are no volunteers or guides to take students around to the activities, so parents, counselors, or teachers are expected to remain with students during the event. Information areas are available parents and counselors may collect additional information and resources about engineering for their students.
