What does a solar-powered, high-flying hero named Heliora have in common with a peppy polymer that transforms into a cell-size, chain-welding warrior to battle an antibiotic-resistant superbug? Both won the 2018 Generation Nano challenge!

Teams of K-12 students can win up to $10,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds in this real-world research simulation sponsored by Toshiba and the National Science Teachers Association. Projects are due February 8, 2018.
Who says you can’t un-ring a bell? As a team of acoustical engineers and a biomedical engineering student demonstrate, “destructive interference” can can silence even a huge temple bell – leaving a sleeping baby undisturbed.
Spider-Man’s creator, Stan Lee, finds inspiration in STEM. And he hopes students in grades 6 to 12 will, too, by dreaming up comics or short videos in the National Science Foundation’s Generation Nano: Superheroes Inspired by Science competition. Top entries can win up to $1,500 in scholarships, with $500 stipends for teachers. Enter by January 8, 2018. 
Middle and high school students follow the engineering design process to create wearable devices to monitor the health of humans, animals, or both in this competition sponsored by North Carolina State University’s Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST). The program includes teacher training and lesson plans to help implement the design challenge. Register teams by Feb. 15, 2018.
“Engineering for your Community” is the theme of the National Academy of Engineering’s 2018 EngineerGirl! Essay Contest. Girls and boys in grades 3 to 12 can win up to $500 for writing pleas to persuade local or national officials to improve such infrastructure such as roads, trash collection, and the 9-1-1 emergency response system.
ASEE’s Pre-College Engineering Education Division is sponsoring a social media contest. Share how you engage diverse students in inclusive engineering and compete to win a $1,000 travel award to attend ASEE’s Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, June 24 – June 28, 2017. Submit entries by May 1, 2017.
After-school and other informal activities can inspire students to pursue STEM. That’s the impetus for a new challenge launched by the Overdeck Family Foundation and Simons Foundation that invites teachers to submit ideas for creative, hands-on STEM projects that can be done outside of school. Submit ideas by April 30, 2017.
