Materials Science Workshops

The Homeschool Science Program (HSP) presents free materials science workshops, at the Sciencenter in Ithaca, NY, on select Tuesdays, 2-3 p.m., November 2010 through March 2011 for children ages 6-13 and their adult guardians. The workshops are hands-on and encourage students to explore how materials interact with each other. Workshops are led by Cornell faculty, post doctoral associates, graduate and undergraduate students. The Homeschool Science Program (HSP) is a partnership between CCMR’s Educational Programs Office (EPO) and the Ithaca Sciencenter Museum.

The 2010 – 2011 program runs during the school year, select Tuesdays of every month from 2:00pm – 3:00pm in the second floor classroom of the Sciencenter in Ithaca, NY. All programs are free to the homeschooling community and include free admission to the Sciencenter at the conclusion of the workshop.

Registration:

Due to the popularity of the program and the limited space registration is required. To reserve your spot in any of the upcoming activities contact Educational Programs Manager, Kevin Dilley, by email or by phone at (607) 254-8256. Please be sure to include the name and age of the participating child, name of the accompanying adult and either a contact email address or phone number.

Workshops are recommended for children ages 6-13. We ask that parents accompany and participate with their child(ren) so that it is a family learning experience.

Schedule of 2010 – 2011 workshops and topics:

  • November 9, 2010: Bridge Building: Families will learn about structural engineering and what engineers have to consider when designing bridges. They will see how stresses are concentrated in materials and then try to build a drinking straw bridge to certain specifications.
  • December 14, 2010: Sounds of Science: Explore the science of sound waves. Families will visualize and compare differences in sounds using an oscilloscope, with separate demonstration of environment in which no sound can exist at all!
  • January 11, 2011: Density: Investigate what causes things to float or sink in water and other liquids. Families will build their own Cartesian diver which works on the same principle as submarines.
  • February 8, 2011: Drop Tubes: Families will investigate the force materials have when they drop. They will also predict how strong that force will be with different weights.
  • March 8, 2011: Catapults: Families will build and optimize a small catapult while learning basic principles of physics and the scientific process.

The homeschooled students who attend the program usually belong to one of the three homeschool organizations in the area:
