Contest: Virtual Science Challenge

Louisville-Science-CenterLevel: Students in grades 5-10. Prizes: include a $1,000 Grand Prize, as well as IMAX theatre tickets and memberships to the Louisville Science Center. Entry Deadline: June 14, 2010.

The AT&T Virtual Science Challenge is a multimedia contest for Kentucky students entering grades 5 through 10 who want a fun, non-traditional way to showcase their ideas. The contest provides an opportunity to effectively communicate creative solutions to science challenges through interactive, web-based projects. It encourages the development of science, math, engineering, and technology skills as students work individually or in teams to tackle unconventional science challenges and post their solutions online.

CONTEST DESCRIPTION: Eligible students will have the opportunity to create an original-work, five-minute video (or other digital file) that answers one of three scientific challenges and create a unique response to that challenge. The challenges are:

  1. Arts + Sciences = Knowledge
  2. What IF?
  3. SOS: Science of Survival

VIDEO SUBMISSION: To enter, a student must submit one, and only one, Entry Video explaining and/or demonstrating one of the scientific challenges listed above.

The Entry Video must be no longer than five minutes. The Entry Video must be the original work of the student. Only the student (or team of participating students) can appear in the Entry Video, no other individuals should be filmed. Students must work independently (or as a team) on the development of their video concept and must record their video with minimal help or direction from others. Entries WILL NOT be accepted which include non-student work. Please see the Website for full details.

ELIGIBILITY: The Virtual Science Challenge (“Contest”) is open to all legal Kentucky residents who are students entering or enrolled in 5th through 10th grade at a public, private, parochial, or home school.

Deadline: All students must be registered on the site and the video (or file) must be uploaded between by June 15, 2010.

Please visit the contest Website to read the full requirements of registration, eligibility, and submission, which includes acquiring parent/guardian permission before June 14, 2010.

TO REGISTER AND ENTER: Visit www.virtualsciencechallenge.com, register, and click on the “Upload” link. Follow directions to complete the Online Entry Form and include a zip code and a parent or legal guardian’s email address. A Consent Form will be mailed to the parent or guardian, who must sign and return it by no later than 11:59 P.M. EDT on June 14, 2010.

The AT&T Virtual Science Challenge is a program developed by the Louisville Science Center, a nonprofit educational institution that encourages people of all ages to enjoy science, mathematics and technology in a stimulating and engaging environment that is educational as well as entertaining. As the State Science Center of Kentucky and one of the region’s major family attractions, the Science Center serves over 500,000 persons each year.
