Contest Deadline Extended: Science Video. August 31, 2010

Deadline for the Kavli Science Video Contest has been extended to August, 31, 2010.

This contest for K-12 students invites videos that are creative, surprising, and “contagious,” spreading science enthusiasm to others. Videos might explore a scientific concept, show the wonders of nature, show what scientific discovery has done for us in the past or will do for us in the future, introduce a great scientist or engineer, or simply show why we should care about science and/or engineering. Prizes include a screening on the National Mall, money , and possibly even a trip to the Science Expo in Washington D.C.

The Bridge Ocean Education Teacher Resource Center from the National Marine Educators Association offers a host of different resources approved by teachers, for teachers. The website features news, lesson plans, activities, data, publications, virtual expeditions, information on science topics, featured websites, teacher-chosen web resources, help in guiding students, science fairs, student programs, and professional development like workshops, grants, awards, courses, distance learning, and summer programs.

Philadelphia's Franklin Institute is a science museum "in the spirit of inquiry and discovery embodied by Benjamin Franklin" that aims to inspire an understanding of and passion for science and technology learning. It offers visiting and permanent exhibitions, an IMAX theatre, planetarium, and school programs and summer camps. Its Center for Innovation in Science Learning provide educators with helpful resources, links, and news stories.

Outreach: University of California-Irvine Chemistry

The UCI Chemistry Outreach Program was developed to address the issue of declining opportunities to learn chemistry. In the program, a graduate student or postdoctoral coordinator sends teams of graduate and undergraduate student volunteers to Orange County schools to perform demonstrations and talk about chemistry. The coordinator contacts the high schools, develops the demonstrations, recruits and trains the volunteers, and supplies the volunteers with materials needed for the demonstrations.

Da Vinci - The Genius is a traveling exhibition on display at the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C., from June 18 to Sept. 12, that demonstrates the full scope of Leonardo da Vinci's remarkable innovations as an inventor, artist, anatomist, sculptor, engineer, musician, and architect. The exhibition includes Da Vinci's visions for the glider, parachute, precursor to the modern helicopter, forerunner of the modern military tank, automobile, submarine, ball bearing and gear systems, and other inventions that were far ahead of their time.

The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio offers summer camps, grade-specific theme days, live science shows, demonstrations, 300 interactive exhibits, and more. At the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond, visitors will find interactive learning and activities at the exhibits: Science Unplugged, Bioscape, Electriworks, Newton in SpacE: bodies in motion, Space Gallery, Virginia Tech Solar House, and the Virginia Tech Solar House. Visitors also will soon be able to visit the green roof project atop the IMAX theater. Museum programs include visiting exhibitions, educational programming, overnight adventures, lectures, demonstrations, live theater and summer camps. Contest: Virtual Science Challenge

The AT&T Virtual Science Challenge is a multimedia contest for Kentucky students entering grades 5 through 10 who want a fun, non-traditional way to showcase their ideas. The contest provides an opportunity to effectively communicate creative solutions to science challenges through interactive, web-based projects. It encourages the development of science, math, engineering, and technology skills as students work individually or in teams to tackle unconventional science challenges and post their solutions online. Prizes: include a $1,000 Grand Prize, as well as IMAX theatre tickets and memberships to the Louisville Science Center. Entry Deadline: June 15, 2010.
