Middle school girls are invited to experience the creativity and innovation of engineering and technology with fun hands-on activities at the University of San Diego, CA, on August 7, 2010. Come meet women engineers, scientist, and technologist and hear first-hand about their exciting careers. Cost: Free. Registration deadline: August 2, 2010.

Contest Deadline Extended: Science Video. August 31, 2010

Deadline for the Kavli Science Video Contest has been extended to August, 31, 2010.

This contest for K-12 students invites videos that are creative, surprising, and “contagious,” spreading science enthusiasm to others. Videos might explore a scientific concept, show the wonders of nature, show what scientific discovery has done for us in the past or will do for us in the future, introduce a great scientist or engineer, or simply show why we should care about science and/or engineering. Prizes include a screening on the National Mall, money , and possibly even a trip to the Science Expo in Washington D.C.

Summer Camp 2010: Think Engineering and Robotics

Summer camp isn't always about crafts, swimming, and mosquito bites anymore. In Warner Robins, Ga., the STARBASE Robins Engineering Academy allows middle school students to gain familiarity with basic engineering principles and hands-on prototyping on a 3D printer.

Outreach: California STEM Careers Program

Five California State Universities have received a Learn and Serve America Higher Education grant totaling $1.5 million from The Corporation for National and Community Service. The grant is based on California State University-San Bernardino's CoyoteCareers program. It will fund a new program, "STEM SQUARED," which will support service learning in STEM disciplines, as well as academic support, career skills training, and networking opportunities.

The Bridge Ocean Education Teacher Resource Center from the National Marine Educators Association offers a host of different resources approved by teachers, for teachers. The website features news, lesson plans, activities, data, publications, virtual expeditions, information on science topics, featured websites, teacher-chosen web resources, help in guiding students, science fairs, student programs, and professional development like workshops, grants, awards, courses, distance learning, and summer programs.

Outreach: Carnegie Mellon Robotics Program

Carnegie Mellon's new Fostering Innovation through Robotics Exploration (FIRE) program, a DARPA-backed effort to increase middle and high schoolers' interest in STEM and computer science, will support the creation of programs such as game-like virtual worlds where robot programs can be tested and computerized tutors that teach mathematics and computer science in the context of robotics.

Author Mary Roach speaks at an evening lecture at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. on Wed., Aug. 4, to discuss her new book Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void. She describes how astronauts prepare for and endure their trips to space, what happens when you don’t walk on the ground for a year, and the overall experience of space simulations. Cost: $25 Gen. Admission, $15 Member.

Museum: The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia

Philadelphia's Franklin Institute is a science museum "in the spirit of inquiry and discovery embodied by Benjamin Franklin" that aims to inspire an understanding of and passion for science and technology learning. It offers visiting and permanent exhibitions, an IMAX theatre, planetarium, and school programs and summer camps. Its Center for Innovation in Science Learning provide educators with helpful resources, links, and news stories.
