CTE Makover Challenge

Could makerspaces transform career, technical, and vocational education? The U.S. Department of Education believes so and has launched a CTE Makeover Challenge to kick-start the process. Up to 10 schools could win $20,000 in cash and other awards to turn their makerspace designs into reality. Submissions due April 1, 2016.

Mega Engineering is the theme for the National Academy of Engineering’s 3rd annual Engineering for You video contest (E4U3). Individuals or teams of students in middle school, high school, and college are invited to create and sumbit short, 1 to 2 minute videos focusing on a complex engineering endeavor that spans geographic and cultural boundaries – such as building communications networks or sanitation systems – and how these projects benefit society. The grand prize is $25,000.
Calling all Starfleet cadets! Star Trek and NASA want you to “boldly go where no one has gone before” and engineer the future of food in space by creating a digital 3-D model of a non-edible, food-related item for future astronauts living aboard the International Space Station.
ProjectCSGIRLS aims to break down the gender gap in tech fields by encouraging middle school girls to learn computer programming and develop ideas that are powerful, disruptive, and cutting-edge. In this contest, students build something using computer science and technology that can help solve an imminent social problem in one of three areas: global health, a safer world, and intelligent technology. Submissions are due April 15, 2016.
The sixth annual Google Science Fair offers students between 13 and 18 a chance to compete for $100,000 in scholarships, a trip to the Galapagos, and a first-hand look at Virgin Galactic’s latest spacecraft – among other prizes. Projects are due May 18, 2016.
The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC), one of the country’s premier science education programs, offers graduating high school seniors a month of outdoor adventure and hands-on science projects in the beautiful woods near Bartow, W.V., all travel costs and camp fees paid. Apply by February 17, 2016.
Register by April 1, 2016 for Washington State University’s problem-solving competition that puts high school teams through a dozen different challenges, with up to $100,000 in cash prizes. 
Computer programming is an essential language, one that an Atlanta-based tech company chief believes every elementary student should get a head start on learning. And he’s launching a nationwide grant contest that would send a master coding instructor to train K-8 teachers in a high-poverty school district for up to a year.
The 2014 EngineerGirl! Essay Contest from the National Academies & National Academy of Engineering focuses on 50 Years of Engineering in Society and how engineering might change life in the next five decades. Students in three age categories – elementary, middle, and high school – compete for monetary prizes and recognition through research and writing essays on one of several topics. Deadline: March 1, 2014.
