Several contests are being planned to be held at the Science Museum of Virginia on Sunday Feb. 28, 2010, during Career Day in conjunction with Engineers Week. As in years past, contests will include an egg drop contest and a bridge building contest.

The Washington Science Teachers’ Association (WSTA) will hold its annual conference, March 12 – 14, 2010. ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) offers for purchase a poster series highlighting the achievements of African American engineers and inventors. The poster series contains ten posters, measuring 14-by-18 inches, each displaying a picture of an African American engineer or inventor and information about their work.

Workshop: Animation Workshop, Tufts U., Mass. Feb 17-19

At this Tufts University Center for Engineering Education 3-day workshop held Feb. 17 -19, students grades 3-6 will create animations using animation software designed at the CEEO (www.samanimation.com). Students will use materials such as LEGO, clay, and whiteboards to design and create movie sets. Cost: $300. Medford, Mass.

Essay Contest: R U Curious? Grades 1-12, Cambridge, Mass.


Students ages 5 to 18 are invited to take the Cambridge Science Festival’s Curiosity Challenge: Write an essay, draw or take a picture about your curiosity and tell us how it prompted you to explore your world. Then enter your essay or artwork in the Curiosity Challenge by submitting it at any Cambridge Public School or Cambridge Public Library branch or at the MIT Museum by Feb. 12, 2010.

Lesson: Selling and Buying a Green Car

In this lesson, students investigate the growing concerns over automobile fuel sources. Using background information from PBS’s NewsHour Report, students engage in an activity of selling and buying an environmentally friendly car. They work together to consider what it means for a car to be “green”; which current vehicles are considered green, and why; and how automobile sellers might use information about environmental impact to sell their cars.

Agriculture with a High-tech Edge

Traditionally, high-school agricultural science classes have had a vocational-education tinge to them that didn’t accurately reflect the high-tech aspects of farming today. Now several schools in nine states are piloting a new, standard national curriculum that’s more challenging. It’s called CASE, or Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education.

Six-state Initiative Tackles Dropout Crisis

The National Governors Association has launched a two-year initiative to tackle the dropout problem in six states: Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Tennessee and West Virginia. Nationwide, only 70 percent of students leave school with a high school diploma.
